5th (Airdrie) VB Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) Victorian Officer’s Helmet in tin circa 1887-92. A superb rare short-lived example of a green cloth Home Service pattern helmet complete with silvered cruciform base, spike, rose bosses and velvet back chin chain. To the front a helmet plate with Guelphic crowned thistle sprays bearing Sphinx and China Dragon enclosing a mullet over a strung bugle and a two tier scroll inscribed “5TH VOLR. BATTN.”, “THE SCOTTISH RIFLES”. The interior with crimson silk edged leather sweatband. Overall near VGC ... Accompanied by its shaped metal transit/storage tin.
On 1st April 1897 the Battalion was disbanded as a result of the severe criticism by the Officer commanding 26th Regimental District on its discipline. Helmet replaced by the shako in 1892.
