A fine scarce die-stamped blackened brass example. Maltese cross surmounted by Imperial crowned “MR” cypher with “20” resting on a scroll inscribed “ARTISTS”. Centre of cross mounted with oval device bearing conjoined heads of Mars and Minerva and inscription “CUM MARTE MINERVA”. Three loops to reverse.
Designed by J.W. Wyon the famous medal designer who served as a private in the Corps. Unit raised as 38th Middlesex RV, renumbered 20th in 1880. Attached to Rifle Brigade in 1881. 1st April 1908 transferred to the new Territorial Force as 28th County of London (Artists Rifles). 1947 became 21 Special Air Service (Artists).
