49th (or The Princess Charlotte of Wales’s or Hertfordshire) Regiment of Foot Albert shako plate c1839-55
A scarce example, believed excavated in the Crimea. Within a crowned wreath of oak and laurel, ’49’ on a lined ground. Both original lead soldered iron loops to reverse. Crown reaffixed and other fractures and repairs repairs
The regiment was awarded its first three Victoria Crosses for service during the Crimean War (1854-56), where it saw action at Alma (1854), Inkerman (1854) and Sevastopol (1855).
